2026 Canton Cross Country | Season Recap

10/26/2026As my first season as head coach of Canton Cross Country comes to a close, I've had some time to reflect on everything we accomplished together. When I first met with our athletes and parents this summer, I made one thing clear: our goal was to be at our best when the postseason arrived. From day one, we placed a particular emphasis on the Regional Championships. That was our opportunity to earn a trip to State, and I wanted the structure of our training and racing season to reflect that priority. But before we could focus on October, we had to start with the basics.Throughout the early summer, we worked to establish consistent daily routines. Warm-ups, drills, practice structure, and expectations became part of our everyday approach. As those habits became more familiar, we gradually introduced more demanding aerobic workouts, tempo sessions, and eventually faster, more race-specific training. The objective wasn't to rush fitness. It was to build something we could rely on later in the season. When competition began, we were immediately tested.Beresford provided a great opening meet and an opportunity to see where we stood. Dakota Valley brought difficult heat and even a lost shoe. Augie Twilight gave us another hot evening of racing, complete with a delayed start. We navigated canceled meets, adjusted our schedule, and enjoyed the opportunity to compete at home in Canton.Along the way, we tried to make every race serve a purpose.Sometimes the objective was to execute a controlled, balanced race and finish strong. Other times, I challenged athletes to be aggressive, run with competitors they might normally hesitate to follow, and find out what they were capable of.At other meets, we deliberately started conservatively and focused on how many competitors we could catch over the final portion of the race. Not every race was about producing the fastest possible time or the highest possible placing. Sometimes the goal was to learn something that would help us later. And eventually, later arrived. At the Regional Championship, all eight of our competing athletes ran their fastest times of the season.Of our scoring eight runners we had six personal bests and two season bests.Eight athletes stepping to the starting line and delivering when we'd spent months preparing to do exactly that.I don't think I could have asked for a more from the team. Those performances helped send two of our boys and two of our girls to the State Championship, where we capped off the season with an outstanding weekend, including one of Canton's best individual State finishes in recent memory. And beyond the performances, we had a lot of fun. That's something I don't want to overlook. We worked hard, we competed, we challenged ourselves, but we also laughed, made memories, and enjoyed being part of a team.As a first-year coach, I've learned that building a successful program involves much more than writing workouts. It's about getting to know athletes individually, understanding what motivates them, encouraging them when things are difficult, and celebrating when they're willing to take a chance. Some of my favorite moments this season came from watching athletes step outside their comfort zones. Whether that meant racing more aggressively, taking on greater responsibility, or simply showing up ready to work, those efforts mattered.I also want to recognize my assistant coach Luke for the leadership and consistency he brought to the program. Coming into an established team as a new coach, I knew it was important to build on what was already here rather than change everything overnight. His support and leadership helped make that transition possible. To our athletes: thank you for trusting the process, embracing new ideas, and giving me the opportunity to be part of your season. To our parents, families, and supporters: thank you for the encouragement, flexibility, and countless ways you helped make this season possible.I came away from State feeling an immense sense of satisfaction. Not because everything was perfect or because I have everything figured out as a coach, but because I got to watch a group of young athletes work toward something together and see that work pay off.I'm incredibly proud of what this team accomplished, and even more excited about the foundation we've started building. What a first year. Thank you, Canton Cross Country.
